STONINGTON & GROTON

Groton
Founded in 1646 by Governor Winthrop, the area was originally called Pequot Plantation until 1705. Shipbuilding, the town's earliest industry, was put to the test in the Revolutionary War when Groton ships harassed the British. Legend has it that Benedict Arnold led his attack on Fort Griswold in the City of Groton in revenge. Shipping and whaling were major sources of revenue for the new states, and local factories built the Civil War iron clad Galena and in the 1950's, the first nuclear powered submarine, Nautilus.

Groton is home to such major corporations as the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics. This legendary corporation stunned the world with the launching of the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine, and the first submarine to explore under the polar ice cap. Today it is a museum near the main gate of the Naval Submarine Base, which is also one of the region's largest employers. The World Research headquarters of Pfizer, Inc. a, research facility dedicated to the development of medicines, is located in Groton.

Southeastern Connecticut is an area rich in history. Fort Griswold State Park and the Groton monument commemorate one of the nation's bloodiest Revolutionary War battles where Redcoats led by Benedict Arnold slaughtered colonial defenders. In the ensuing conflagration most of Groton was burned to the ground.

Stonington
Famous for its 100,000 miles of stone walls and 25 miles of beautiful shoreline, Stonington was incorporated when the earliest settlers to the area arrives from Plymouth colony in 1649.

Connecticut Governor John Winthrop, Jr. obtained the charter for the Colony of Connecticut in 1662 from England that set boundaries to include the town. The General Court first named the town Mystic in 1665 and the name was changed to Stonington in 1666.

During the war of 1812, the British Navy attacked Stonington. Being frugal New Englanders, Citizens collected the cannonballs fired upon them and shot them back. In the end, the British vessel that had attacked the town was sunk by it's own ammunition.

Business in Stonington revolves around its historic district and the seaport area of Mystic. In addition, this village is still an active fishing and boating port that annually celebrates the Blessing of the Fleet. The business of Stonington is best described as the preservation of traditional New England coastal village life.

Stonington features tree-lined village streets with quaint shops and excellent restaurants. Residential living in this historic community features rural estates as well as coastal summer homes.
