Every month the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) highlights a member business deserving of special recognition in our community. For the month of July, we are excited to announce Finest Kind Signs, located at 256 South Broad Street in Pawcatuck, as the recipient of the GMCCs Business of the Month award. The honor is nomination-based and determined by several factors, including community involvement and overall success.

Finest Kind Signs, owned by Cam Bortz, creates high-quality award-winning signs and graphics, and prides itself on being a source for imaginative design and effective business identity in Southeastern Connecticut. Established on Block Island in 1988, Finest Kind Signs moved to the Mystic area in 1990 and to its present location in Pawcatuck in 1994.

Bortz sees as his personal goal the visual improvement of the local community by designing and producing beautiful and effective signage for both large and small businesses, as well as carved gold-leafed house signs for the residential market. Among his many satisfied customers are S&P Oyster Company, Engine Room, Harp and Hound, and the new Harbour House Restaurant. Bortz is also a published author; his novel, BERMUDA HIGH, is set on Bell Island (a fictionalized Block Island) in the summer of 1979 and is available through Bank Square Books.

It is through the work of Bortz and employee Jake Hertzler that many local businesses have created a presence and established their own unique identity.

I believe signage is an integral part of the visual appeal of a given community, says Bortz. As a town dependent upon and influenced by tourism, how we look - as businesses and the community as a whole is of the utmost importance to our economy. I like to think that Ive made a difference in that respect over the past two decades.

Such an organization that works to visually strengthen our community and better our business community with its work is truly deserving of recognition. The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor Cam Bortz and his team at Finest Kind Signs. Congratulations!
