Community Proud

The Chamber is always working on ways to meaningfully promote members of the community and in doing so, we’ve created a social media series called ‘Community Proud, Celebrating Those That Live and Work Among Us!’.

We believe in celebrating the community heroes who live among us — maybe a Stonington lifer, or the person with that interesting story who connects to the community in a meaningful way, or the third generation tradesman who carries on their family name. This series is designed to spotlight the heartbeat of our community!

To nominate someone, simply send us a photo of them (preferably 500 x 500 pixels) along with a brief write-up explaining why they deserve recognition (just a couple of sentences). Our social media team will conduct a quick interview, snap a few photos, and share their story across our platforms, reaching over 10k followers. We'll tag and promote your business for added visibility and create a landing page featuring them for all to see!

BILL SMITH

Bill served on the Groton Representative Town Meeting, chaired Always Home, volunteered for years at Mystic Seaport Museum, and stepped in as interim president of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce. He became deeply involved with the Rotary Club of Mystic, where he later served as president and currently serves as treasurer, fundraising chair, and youth services chair. Throughout it all, Bill remained active in church leadership and community service.

From 2011 to 2021, Groton was home. Then came another chapter. Bill and Betty sold their house, let go of nearly everything they owned, bought a RV, and spent more than two years living full time on the road with their dog, Sundance. They traveled extensively, embracing freedom, curiosity, and adventure. By fall of 2023, they found themselves asking one more important question: where do we want to live?

The answer brought Bill and Betty returned back to the region they love, settling in Stonington. For Bill, coming home meant reconnecting with a place where people care deeply about their towns and take pride in making them better. He often says there is something rare here, a connection and lifestyle that is both engaging and grounded.

These days, Bill is once again fully immersed in community life. He serves as a trustee for the Mystic & Noank Library, mentors students at Fitch High School, and sits on the board of Hope in Focus. He and Betty also volunteer at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. Bill also works alongside his daughter on SEAWELL, a premium non-alcoholic sparkling wellness beverage that is slated for launch later this year. Supporting his daughter's entrepreneurial journey is one of his greatest sources of joy.

When asked what keeps him rooted here, Bill always comes back to relationships. The feeling of belonging when walking into a room and knowing lots of people whether it be lifelong friends from high school or newer acquaintances. He has traveled to more than 30 countries and is convinced that this area is something special.

CHRIS BRADLEY

MYSTIC & NOANK LIBRARY

Chris Bradley is the Executive Director of the Mystic & Noank Library, and she brings a lifetime of service to the role. Originally from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Chris has been a librarian for more than 50 years, starting her career as a children’s librarian at the Boston Public Library in 1970. What began as an unexpected path, she once planned to earn a doctorate in medieval history because she has always loved history, turned into a calling rooted in helping people.

Over the decades, Chris has led and served libraries and library organizations across the country and throughout Connecticut. Her professional journey includes work with the Timberland Regional Library System in Olympia, Washington, an experience she describes as exciting and deeply focused on customer service. She later worked for the CT State Library, then spent a decade at the Kingswood Oxford School Library, ten years at the Norwalk Public Library, and also served as Executive Director of the Connecticut Library Consortium and President of the Connecticut Library Association. Today, Mystic is home, and she joined the Mystic & Noank Library in December of 2020, toward the end of the pandemic.

Ask Chris what keeps her rooted in community and she lights up about Mystic’s spirit. She speaks warmly about the sincere volunteer culture here, the kindness of the people, and the way community support feels real and mission-driven. That same mindset shows up in her leadership style which is collaborative, team-centered, and grounded in respect for everyone’s role. Chris believes libraries work best when every job matters, every person contributes, and the mission comes first. In her words, this work is not about personal accolades. It is about doing your best for an institution that will outlast all of us.

HEATHER HARRIS

BLACK HAWK SPORT FISHING

The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is pleased to shine a spotlight on Heather Harris of Black Hawk Sport Fishing in our Community Proud series. A lifelong resident of the Groton and Mystic area, Heather balances two callings that both center on caring for people. By day she is a special education teacher in Stonington. In the evenings, on weekends, and throughout the summer, she is the steady hand behind the scenes at her family’s business, the Black Hawk.

Heather’s roots here run deep. She grew up in Groton, attended Groton Public Schools, and graduated from Fitch High School before heading to Rhode Island College in Providence. She later spent a year in California for graduate school, studying education and child life, and completed an internship at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. Although she became a certified child life specialist, her path ultimately led her to the classroom. Today, she teaches special education in Stonington while raising three children with her husband, whom she first met back in middle school. Their family includes two sons and a daughter who joined their family through adoption from Bulgaria, a journey that further shaped Heather’s heart for children and families.

Her connection to the Black Hawk started with what sounded like a small favor. When her father first purchased the boat, he asked if she could “help write a few checks and pay a few bills.” That simple request grew into a second career. Heather now runs the Black Hawk office and has learned the full scope of small business operations. She manages employees, bookkeeping, permits, charters, group trips, and fishing reports, along with the website and social media. Most of that work happens after her kids are in bed or on weekends, but it is clear she would not have it any other way.
