Mystic Bascule Bridge 100th Anniversary

The Mystic River Bascule Bridge, the oldest of its kind in the United States turned 100 this summer! This famous Bridge has had a long history dating back to the 1800’s, but the current Bridge (Bascule Bridge stands for a moveable bridge with a counterweight that continually balances a span or leaf), was first opened on July 19, 1922! The bridge is one of the most popular attractions in the State. It has connected the communities of Groton and Stonington for a century. For the 100’s of members that represent the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce, we are filled with pride for the iconic bridge and celebration!
On Saturday, October 15th we celebrated our Bridge Anniversary with a Dedication in Mystic River Park and Fireworks on the Mystic River.  The community including local leaders and special guests honored Mystic's Bascule Bridge and were treated to a Fireworks Celebration, sponsored by Foxwoods Resort Casino, that was incredible!

Mystic Bascule Bridge Souvenir Guide

While many think of the Mystic Seaport Museum and the Mystic Aquarium when they think of Mystic, there is no more iconic image of Mystic than the Mystic River Bridge.  It not only connects the two sides of the village of Mystic, it connects all of us with the history of Mystic.  The Souvenir guide is a handbook of history of the Mystic Bascule Bridge, past and present.

The 100th Anniversary illustration of
the Mystic Bascule Bridge

honors its fine details to each rivet, angle and shadow. The distant Mystic Seaport Museum, riverfront homes and abutting businesses are minimal but maintain detail and color to preserve continuity. The illustration is digitally hand-drawn from a composite of photos but most prominently from the vantage of the bridge tender’s house. The curated selection of beams fade and become abstract to allow for prominent display of the counter balance.  Limited Edition 11x17 printed signed by the Artist and Numbered 1 to 100.
